Already two months into the fall semester, with midterms in prime time, students are finally acclimated to the kinetic lifestyle on Grounds and most have their favorite “spot,” be it for studying, eating, or exercising. Now you may have your go-to treadmill in the Aquatics & Fitness Center, or attend 6 a.m. cycle every Thursday morning, but spicing things up may be just what your fitness routine needs. One of the great things about the UVa Intramural-Recreation Sports department is that you have access to numerous facilities and activities, many of which work different parts of the body, and can be more fun than just a thirty minute cardio run. Below I list some of my favorite hidden gems of UVa IM-Rec Sports.
Aquatic & Fitness Center
Let's start out with what you probably know best: the Aquatic & Fitness Center. The AFC is home to a plethora of a cardio machines, free weights, and weight machines, but you can also find countless Group Exercise classes to participate in. Some of my favorites include Zumba, Yoga, and kickboxing. You can find the class chedule for the AFC and the North Grounds Recreation Center online.
Unless you’re a swimmer or a lifeguard, you might not know about one of the largest hot tubs in Virginia, located at the east end of the pool deck in the AFC. Holding 7,445 gallons of water, the AFC hot tub is perfect for winding down after a hard workout or swim session. There is also one located at NGRC! Aditionally, the AFC houses a 721,444 gallon Olympic pool, and a 47,353 gallon warm water pool.
Although the weather is fantastic for an outdoor run this time of year, the indoor tracks at the AFC and Memorial Gymnasium offer great options for those times we suffer from a bout of rough Virginia weather.
Slaughter Recreation Center
If you haven’t been to Slaughter, then you’re doing yourself a disservice. Since its opening in 1978, Slaughter has undergone many changes with great additions. Now, you have access to seven handball/racquetball courts, three squash courts, a wallyball court, and badminton. If you don’t have equipment, no worries, you can rent most racquets, balls, and birdies from the front desk.
Beach Volleyball Court
If you’re looking to extend summer a bit longer, head over to the sand volleyball court located next to Mem Gym and the Snyder Tennis Courts. You can also join an intramural league next spring and play under the lights.
Outdoor Recreation and Retreats
Virginia in the fall is one of the prettiest parts of the year. The Outdoor Recreation department is a perfect resource for finding ways to experience autumn outdoors. In the month of October alone, Outdoor Rec is offering awesome activities including Family Bouldering on October 24th and the Halloween Full Moon High Ropes Course at Poplar Ridge Challenge Course on October 27th.
Regardless of whether you’re looking to get outdoors more, switch up your usual workout routine, or just try something new with friends check out one of the many hidden gems of UVa Intramural-Recreational Sports!
